Autumn berries and embracing the wild weeds. When I first started gardening in this garden 12+ years ago I aimed for perfection. Tidy rows, weedless paths and maintained order. I realised as the years went by that this approach didn't really suit my style (or lifestyle - hello two children and working life!) I am now more of a "relaxed" gardener that lets wild be wild and nature take the lead. Sure, I prune to maintain fruit trees and cut away old berry canes and leaders but only what will encourage production next season. The garden may look a little wild but the benefit is diversity which in turn means beneficial plants/weeds and insects to maintain balance and one happy lively buzzing garden. Hands up if you are also a wild relaxed gardener type?!⁠ 🙋‍♀️
*These raspberries are an example of letting nature take the lead as I stopped fighting their spread and let them sprout and take over a patch of garden that wasn't planned for berries but is now one very productive raspberry patch 🍓🍒 happy days!

I love foraging in autumn, especially for wild apples, figs and walnuts - although you have to be quick to get to them before the possums! I took this image recently of a nearby tree laden with apples while working on a new recipe commission (will share more soon). ⁠
If you are in Nelson check out "Open Orchards" (search Google maps) for the location of public and wild fruit trees. It is such a great free resource for everyone to use. Please comment below if you know of similar resource in your area.
